Conversación #1 Video & Reflexión
|
To the left, you will find my first Spanish conversation video for eleventh grade, which I did with my sister, Hannah. Below, you will find my reflection on the process as a whole and my areas for growth in the future.
Reflection I feel that I am proficient in writing and reading small pieces of dialogue and writing in Spanish, for I am definitely a visual learner. If I am confident with how to spell a word and pronounce it, I will be more comfortable using it in the context of a conversation. Whether it be Spanish conjugation, punctuation or spelling, it helps me to see writing in Spanish so that I can make connections to similarities between how I read English and how I would interpret a foreign language. Once I can create a solid foundation for myself in Spanish reading and writing, I will feel more comfortable with utilizing the language in written formats in the future. |
The most challenging part of learning Spanish involves interpretation, especially in regards to conversation. If a new phrase or question is presented to me, I might only recognize a few words at first. Because my vocabulary in Spanish is quite limited, I have to work even harder to put two and two together and find meaning within the context of the sentence. I also struggle with memorization, for I often worried last year that I would forget my next line or not remember what to say in response to a certain question. I can hopefully overcome this through a series of rehearsals with whoever my conversational partner might be.
I can imagine using Duolingo as a tool to practice Spanish outside of school with both the typed and audio functions enabled. After dedicating myself to the software last year, I was able to reach 50% "fluency" in Spanish according to the program's measures, which seems too high for how comfortable I was with the language. Nevertheless, I appreciate Duolingo for updating over time. Since I had not used Spanish between May of 2016 and October of 2016 when I was preparing to travel to Costa Rica, Duolingo marked many areas down so that I could build my skills up again. I think the program will be a helpful resource for me to use at home while also allowing me to explore Spanish in a variety of different ways. My close friend, Erick M., will be a good person for me to practice my Spanish skills with whenever I am in need of assistance or want to go over a conversation script that I might be working on.
I want to give a shout-out to my partner in my video (above), Hannah, for stepping up and filming a quick video with me at home for this assignment. Because I had been absent on the day of in-class recordings, I was lucky enough to have two siblings at home that were willing to help me with the conversation. Hannah was able to keep the flow of the conversation moving nicely, and we were able to build questions off of one another's energy.
