Look @ Me Now

Project Overview
For the Look @ Me Now project, we had to express our self-identity and experiences through both literary and visual components on a poster. Each one of the written pieces surrounded a specific literary device such as setting, irony, flashback, characterization, etc. We also had to include images that represented the moments, people or places that we wrote about in our reflections. On the left, you will find a picture of my poster, along with the writing I did for each section of my display. Project Reflection The most important thing I learned over the course of this project is that honesty makes for a better story. A lot of times writers embellish the truth to make life's most ordinary stories into ancient legends told for generations. And that's not a bad thing. But in order to let others know who you truly are, it's good to be open with them, and that's how you can take pride in your own image. I wasn't afraid to share some of my deepest thoughts and experiences, because I felt like this poster was a way for me to put myself out there. I spent a of time both writing and crafting my poster, making sure that it was aesthetically-pleasing. However, if I had to change something about my poster, I maybe would have re-written the paragraph about the "Antagonist" in my life. In this section, I wrote that I did not have an antagonist in my life, but that I tended to not get along with people who were similar to me. I think I could have expanded on this thought and maybe have included an example of an anonymous person who had rubbed me the wrong way in the past. This would help to better illustrate the idea that I was trying to convey, making the paragraph as a whole more interesting. I did my best work for the poster on the writing pieces. I made sure that each one of the paragraphs I wrote was both thoughtful and meaningful, and I really expressed myself through each sentence I put down. After I finished the initial draft of each section, I sought critique from my classmates, and then applied it to my writing to make it even better. However, I was able to be honest and open in my opinions and accounts of various situations from the outset, which made the critique process run smoother. It is always important to me that I put my best foot forward on paper and that I let people know that I strive for excellence when a pen is in my hand. The most enjoyable part of the Look @ Me Now project was designing the poster. I really liked being able to customize my poster in any way that I wanted, and we had a lot of freedom during this assignment. Without the ability to create the display in any way that I wanted, I would have felt like I was being held back from showing who I really was. While it might seem a little irrelevant, visual design is just as important as the words that come directly from the mind. The way in which someone puts a poster together actually reveals a lot about their personality, and I believe my design was no different. Designing the poster may have been my favorite part of the project, but I did not enjoy assembling it. I have to admit, it did take a really long time to think about where I wanted each piece to go, and taping those down once I had figured out my plan. In fact, I think I spent about an hour purely on putting the pieces together. It was kind of like solving a 100-piece puzzle, but I was missing a piece and didn't know where it went. Luckily, the sense of pride that I felt once it was all said and done was greater than the frustration I felt with assembling the poster's components, so it was all good. I think one thing the teacher could change about the project next time would be to add a few more literary devices so that students could choose a certain number of them that they wanted to talk about. Some of the literary devises are not as significant to some people as they are to others, so by giving the students the option of picking which ones they wanted to write about would be helpful. Other than that, this project was extremely successful, and I really liked it as a whole! |
