Odyssey Stop Motion
For this project, we were to base a film off of original spin-offs we made that were inspired by Homer's The Odyssey. My group of three chose my spin-off of the novel, so we were to re-create the dialogue from the story I made. Using a traditional plot line, we had to plan out the sequences of events that would appear in our Stop Motion Film, which we did through the shot list, narration script, and the storyboard. (The latter two items are depicted below). In addition, you will find some of the shots we took of our animations on the green screen, the backgrounds for the green screens, and a map of the setting of our story. There was only one catch up until this point...the green screen did not work out. When we went to edit our project, the green screen was showing as being the color brown, not green, which affected all of our plans.
In this project, I was personally responsible for writing the script, creating the shot list, providing materials, animating the Lego mini figures in our film, sometimes operating the camera, searching for music, creating subtitles, and editing the film. Erick was in charge of the materials list, the treatment script, helping with the shot list, operating the camera (so many frames!), editing the film, finding music, creating subtitles, making credits, and adding transitional shots to the film.Cesar was in charge of the storyboard, revised the shot list, operated the camera, and helped to edit the film.
Because the film was based off of my Odyssey Spin-Off, I had to take a lead on a lot of the decisions related to how the story on paper was going to translate to the action on the screen. However, once my group mates became more familiar with the story, they could input more of their ideas also. I definitely took on a lot of responsibility, but I'm proud of what I was able to accomplish. I am really happy with what I was able to do with the animation of the film, and in the sense that all of the figures moved with fluidity and smoothness. I almost cannot stress how many frames our group took during the process. It was a difficult process syncing up the animation with the time of each audio clip, and many times we would have to reshoot scenes if they did not match the time constraints met by the dialogue. I feel like I could have changed the work I did on the shot list/script. Because of the numerous scenes we had to shoot in because of the settings in my story, it made it hard to constantly change the background all the time. Our longest scene in one background was the last scene between Odysseus and Zeus, which was 30 seconds. The final film was 3:26. I could have made it easier on the group if I had set the action up in just a few places. I really enjoyed working with Erick and Cesar over the course of this project. I work really well with Erick, so we were able to agree on a lot of ideas on where we wanted to go with the animation, shots, and editing decisions. Cesar was very open to everything we suggested, and I think the epitome of our collaboration experience was when we recorded the audio. We all coached the person who was speaking on how they could approach their tone of voice and emotion, and I am totally satisfied with the audio portion. Our group used the time we were given very wisely every day. We went straight to setting up our box, shooting scenes and recording sounds. Having all attended High Tech Middle, we had experience in time management, and knew we had no time to waste. There was not a single day when we procrastinated or misused are time, (okay, maybe a few minutes were wasted but...) I do not have any regrets in this area.
