Get Up, Stand Up Project
For the Get Up, Stand Up project, we focused on the concept of revolution, or change. To start off the unit, we read the graphic novel, Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. The book surrounded a young Iranian girl, (the author), as she was influenced by the culture around her involving the Iranian Revolution. She constantly thought about her political stance and her role in society, and what she wanted to stand up for as a member of a community. After reading about her story, we then explored topic that we were interested in, and that we would stand up for. I chose to research economic inequity in youth sports, and how it is unfair that kids from some backgrounds are not able to participate in athletics due to their financial instability. To further our understanding and interest in this concept, we created stencils with a central image related to that specific topic, and we also wrote persuasive speeches that we would perform at Charity Wings, a local art center in San Marcos. Below, you will see the final draft of my speech, and the evolution of my stencil throughout the process of its creation...
